As a per a recent report prepared by McKinsey &Co (1) the core capabilities of a medical affairs professional include:

  1. Learning agility: Take current knowledge and adapt it for future use, both within and outside the core medical capability
  2. Business leadership: Be conversant with the full commercialization process and interpret R&D and scientific activities for commercial colleagues
  3. Scientific and technological thought leadership: Partner with commercial and development colleagues and engage in lifecycle planning; understand the changing customer landscape
  4. Emotional intelligence and communication skills: Understand and engage customers and colleagues
  5. Deep understanding of compliance: Appreciate the options and constraints of an increasingly compliance-driven environment
  6. Strategic vision: Think across therapeutic areas, assess clinical value, analyze risk versus benefit, and exploit technological advances
