A symposium on “Ethics in Education of Medicines Development “was organized by IFAPP in response to a kind invitation extended by the World Medical Association (WMA) to be presented at the WMA Medical Ethics Conference held on October 4, 2018, in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The learning objectives for this educational event were to create awareness on the complexities of and global needs for competency-based education and training both in clinical research and medicines development as detected from multi-country surveys conducted by IFAPP and the Joint Task Force on Clinical Research Competency, as well as to introduce the ethical framework for Pharmaceutical Physicians and Medicines Development Scientists developed recently by IFAPP.  The IFAPP’s long-term objectives and details of the collaboration established between IFAPP and the WMA including the IFAPP’s contributions to the latest revision of the Declaration of Helsinki were also shared with the audience.

The IFAPP faculty included Drs Honorio Silva, Gustavo Kesselring, and Sandor Kerpel-Fronius.  Dr. Otmar Kloiber (WMA general secretary) attended the session. A productive discussion followed including the need for developing specific educational programs for members of ethics committees. Further educational initiatives with the WMA and allied organizations would be organized for a synergistic collaboration among the parties involved.
